Fabio Viale - In Between

Turin - Fabio Viale’s monumental tattooed statues have arrived in Turin The In Between exhibition opens at the Royal Museums From 14 October 2021 to 9 January 2022, the sculptures of the Piedmontese artist famous all over the world for his creative marble artworks will be on display in Piazzetta Reale and inside the Royal Palace in collaboration with the Poggiali art gallery in Florence Vigorous bodies and delicate female figures, masterpieces by masters such as Canova and Michelangelo: an expression of classic iconography in which the purity of marble clashes with the boldness of the colourful, provocative tattoos that emerge from the skin. All appearance is subverted in the new In Between exhibition at the Royal Museums that host, for the first time in Turin, the monumental works of Fabio Viale who has gained international fame thanks to his extraordinary ability in transforming marble. In collaboration with the Poggiali art gallery in Florence, from 14 October 2021 to 9 January 2022, five monumental sculptures exhibited in Piazzetta Reale and a tour curated by Filippo Masino and Roberto Mastroianni inside the Royal Palace will bear witness to the continuous experimentation of the Piedmontese artist while presenting two new works, unveiled to the public within the setting of the Savoy residence. After the solo exhibition at the Glyptothek Museum in Munich, the participation in the Venice Pavilion at the 2019 Biennale, the exhibition at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow and Truly, an exhibition widespread in the symbolic places of the city of Pietrasanta in Summer 2020, Viale brings his sculptures to the Piedmontese capital. Not only are his works remarkable for their technical virtuosity but also for his ability to reinterpret the forms and themes of classical art in a contemporary way. Eternal models of beauty and metropolitan tribalism, tradition and innovation, a timeless past and current trends all come together in an exhibition designed to make public areas and museum locations interact closely. The exhibition is an opportunity to illustrate Viale's long-standing research as well as his refined and eccentric poetics while deepening into artistic production techniques within a modern professional sculpture studio, ranging from traditional knowledge to numerical control technology. “Leveraging wonder, technical virtuosity and creative reinterpretation – says Enrica Pagella, director of the Royal Museums – Fabio Viale’s artistic production invites us to look in a new light at the sculpture masterpieces that populate our museums and are engraved into everyone's mind: a bridge between past and future, linking tradition and modern experimentation, a tribute to the multiform potential of cultural heritage and an invitation to discover and challenge it without prejudice.” Through In Between, the Royal Museums open up, once again, not only to the new languages of contemporary art but also to the city itself. Local people and tourists alike will be able to admire a part of the exhibition for free as a series of the famous tattooed statues is publicly displayed in Piazzetta Reale. The large area in front of the Royal Palace makes a perfect urban setting for the monumental works that, immersed in light, interact with the surrounding architecture and the urban fabric while showcasing masterpieces that stimulate the collective imagination. The artistic itinerary continues inside the Savoy residence with Amore e Psiche (Cupid and Psyche), a new work that dominates the Hall of the Swiss Guards. The artwork replicates Canova's neoclassical masterpiece while disrupting its traditional interpretation through the tattooing of the female body with the wedding motifs of Middle Eastern brides suggesting a very topical reflection on the condition of women in the current geopolitical context on the themes of conquest, suffering and salvation. “I started working on Amore e Psiche several months ago, a sculpture on which I had initially planned to apply wonderful Japanese tattoos”, says the artist, Fabio Viale. “However, in the light of recent events in Afghanistan, I felt that my project had to undergo a radical change in the attempt to bridge the cultural gap between the West and the Middle East, giving a voice to women not only from that country but also from many other parts of the world. This work represents a new milestone in my career as it allows me to open a window, through sculpture, on aspects of our actuality. In the Chapel of the Holy Shroud, the work Souvenir Pietà (Cristo), from 2006, establishes a strong connection with one of the most important and mysterious icons of Christianity. Finally, in the Royal Armoury, the original work Lorica offers a wearable old-fashioned armour made in pink marble, created from a high-resolution 3D scan of the body of the well-known rapper Fedez, who lent himself to the playful heroisation of his public figure. “For thousands of years – explains the curator Filippo Masino – marble has transformed what is born humble and transitory (be it a human body, a cloth or acanthus leaves) into a noble and eternal substance. Thanks to the work of Fabio Viale, the vitality of real-life re-emerges from the stone surfaces, though without following the usual metaphors. The restructuring of the statues of the Masters, the rewriting of the meanings and the illusion given by the marble representation of other materials stimulate our senses and curiosity while conveying messages of a universal value." “Fabio Viale's works showcase masterpieces that stimulate the collective imagination, in a dialectic relationship between classicism and metropolitan tribalism, innovation and tradition, reality and simulation, which delivers a universal image of the human society and its forms”, adds the curator Roberto Mastroianni. In this grey zone between the known and the unknown, between being and becoming, Fabio Viale explores the timeless value of art and aesthetic practice, illustrating our cultural heritage through contemporary languages in a constant relationship between present and past”. In December 2021, the second stage of the exhibition will take place within the new Halls of Royal Antiquities, which will be dedicated to the series of material fictions – marble that becomes wood, plastic, rubber, polystyrene and paper. A comparison (or, rather, an oxymoron) between the Greco-Roman statuary collected by the Savoys and the extraordinary experiments that have earned Fabio Viale his fame on a global scale.

ANISH KAPOOR AT CASAMADRE

THE ANISH KAPOOR OPENING EXHIBITION YESTERDAY AT CASAMADRE ART GALLERY IN NAPLES.
WHILE I LIQUEFIED FOR THE HOT, THE SILICONE AND RED PIGMENTS WORKS AND THOSE OF WAX, FORTUNATELY THEY REMAINED INTACT.
A CYCLE OF FOUR DRAWINGS AND SIX SCULPTURES  LINKED TO THE THEME OF ROTATION; IN THE LAST ROOM: THE ALUMINIUM MIRROR,  A MIRROR GAME THAT PLAYING WITH  EFFECTS BETWEEN CONCAVE AND CONVEX.
KAPOOR'S WORKS ARE CONCEPTUALLY SPATIAL, PURE ABSTRACTIONS, MEASUREMENTS OF THE INFINITE, OF ABSENCE MORE THAN PRESENCE; IS ACTION IS NEVER NORMATIVE OR IMPOSITIONAL. HIS SCULPTURES ARE SUSPENDED BETWEEN THE MATERIAL AND IMMATERIAL, HARD AND SOFT, SOLID AND FLUID, WEIGHT AND LIGHTNESS, LIGHT AND DARKNESS, AND THE GESTURE THEY INTRODUCE ALSO OSCILLATES BETWEEN STRENGTH AND ABANDONMENT.
HOW CAN WE DESCRIBE THE WORKS IN THIS EXHIBITION: FORMS IN MOTION, REFLECTING FORMS, KAPOOR'S SCULPTURAL OBJECTS ARE INTELLECTUAL ACTS SHAPED BY THE UNCERTAIN  ETYMOLOGY OF OBIECTUM, TO UNDERSTAND KAPOOR'S VIEWPOINT, WE MUST THINK OF OBJECTS TOGETHER WITH SPACE, FOR THE ARTIST OBIECTUM IS AN INDETERMINATE CONCEPT, A NATURALLY INFINITE POSSIBILITY, NOT VISIBLE OBJECTS THAT WE HAVE POSITIONED IN SPACE, BUT THE OBJECT AS A UNIQUE EXTENSION- HIDDEN, COMPRESSED, SWALLOWED UP IN FORMS,  IS THE PRINCIPAL THEME OF HIS WORK.
THE SCULPTURES INSIST ON COLLECTING AND CONCENTRATING WITHIN THEMSELVES AS MUCH OF THE EXTERNAL WORLD POSSIBLE, AS IF FORM WERE AN INNER QUALITY OF THINGS, UNATTAINABLE AND INTANGIBLE; AS IF THE SCULPTOR'S FATE WERE TO ALLOW THIS TO SHINE THROUGH, CROSSING OVER TOWARD WHAT WE CAN NEITHER CONCEDE NOR COMPREHEND.
FUNDAMENTALLY ALL KAPOOR'S ART CONVEYS A SPACE THAT IS SUCKED UP AND CONDENSED INTO OBJECTS THAT REMAIN MUTE AND INEXPRESSIVE, PERFECTLY EMPTY, EVEN IF THEY SEEM LIKE PRESENCES THAT ARE CORPOREAL  AND BOUNDLESS, OR INDEFINITE AND FLEETING, LIKE SOME OF THESE WORKS IN THIS EXHIBITION.

HA INAUGURATO IERI A CASAMADRE, LA GALLERIA D'ARTE CONTEMPORANEA A PIAZZA DEI MARTIRI A NAPOLI, LA MOSTRA DI ANISH KAPOOR.
MENTRE IO MI SCIOGLIEVO DAL CALDO LE OPERE  DI SILICONE E PIGMENTI  ROSSI E QUELLE DI CERA  FORTUNATAMENTE SONO RIMASTE INTATTE.
UN CICLO DI QUATTRO DISEGNI E SEI SCULTURE LEGATI DAL TEMA DELLA ROTAZIONE, NELL'ULTIMA SALA: L'ALLUMINIUM MIRROR, UN GIOCO DI SPECCHI CHE GIOCA CON GLI EFFETTI TRA CONCAVO E CONVESSO.
LE OPERE DI KAPOOR SONO CONCETTUALMENTE SPAZIALI, PURE ASTRAZIONI, MISURAZIONI DELL'INFINITO, DELL'ASSENZA PIÙ CHE DELLA PRESENZA. E RICONOSCERE CHE LA SUA AZIONE NON È MAI NORMATIVA NÉ IMPOSITIVA: SE LE SCULTURE SONO SOSPESE TRA MATERIALE E IMMATERIALE, DURO E MORBIDO, SOLIDO E FLUIDO, PESO E LEGGEREZZA, LUCE E OSCURITÀ, ANCHE IL GESTO CHE LE METTE AL MONDO OSCILLA TRA FORZA E ABBANDONO.
COME DESCRIVERE I LAVORI PRESENTI IN QUESTA MOSTRA, FORME IN MOVIMENTO, RIFLETTENTI, PER CAPIRE IL PUNTO DI VISTA DI KAPOOR SI DOVREBBE POTER PENSARE GLI OGGETTI INSIEME CON LO SPAZIO, L'OBIECTUM PER L'ARTISTA È UN CONCETTO INDETERMINATO, POSSIBILITÀ TENDENZIALMENTE INFINITA NON GLI OGGETTI VISIBILI NELLO SPAZIO POSTO LÌ DA NOI, MA L'OGGETTO COME UN'UNICA ESTENSIONE NASCOSTA, COMPRESSA, INGHIOTTITA NELLE FORME SAREBBE IL TEMA PRINCIPALE DELLA SUA OPERA.
LE SCULTURE INSISTONO NEL RACCOGLIERE E CONCENTRARE IN SÉ QUANTO PIÙ MONDO ESTERNO È POSSIBILE, COME SE LA FORMA FOSSE UNA QUALITÀ INTERIORE DELLE COSE, IRRAGGIUNGIBILE E INTANGIBILE. E FOSSE DESTINO DELLA SCULTORE FAR SÌ CHE POSSA TRASPARIRE, CREANDO UN VARCO VERSO CIÒ CHE NON SI DÀ, NÉ SI PUÒ COGLIERE.
IN FONDO, TUTTA L'ARTE DI KAPOOR CI PARLA DI UN SPAZIO CHE È RISUCCHIATO E CONDENSATO IN OGGETTI CHE RESTANO MUTI E INESPRESSIVI, PERFETTAMENTE VUOTI, SE PURE SI DANNO COME PRESENZE CORPOSE E SMISURATE O INDEFINITE E SFUGGENTI COME ALCUNI LAVORI QUI IN MOSTRA.

WHAT'S HELMUT LANG DOING?

Left:Helmut Lang's sculpture - Right: Helmut Lang's fashion
I want to draw on the few days ago article by Sara Mower published on Vogue.
She writes an "Amarcord" about who was Helmut Lang during the 90's.
"Lang performed the rites of passage into adulthood for all those who had grown up as punks and ravers, people who’d slouched through their youth wearing nothing but T-shirts, jeans, parkas, and sneakers as their tribal badges of honor. Before Helmut, fashion had nothing for this anti-fashion youth-pack to put on. They didn’t even want it. But by the mid-nineties, this was the crowd that was rising to power in the creative classes: artists, actors, stylists, photographers, movie-makers, editors, graphic designers, entrepreneurs-people in their 20s and 30s who were going out and killing it in business for the first time in their lives."
The structured and elegant silhouette by Lang fitted perfectly with the minimalism of the first year ninety. With Martin Margiela, Ann Demeulemeester, and Jil Sander among them, defining styles that became labeled as “deconstructionist” or “minimalist.”
At the beginning the Lang's label have been successful in Austria, this has encouraged Lang to expand in Europe. In 1986, he started selling its models in Paris. In 1998, he moved to New York City. In 1999 Prada bought 49% of the brand Lang, the following year, Prada has gained 51%, taking total control. In 2005 Lang quit his work as fashion designer. Prada consequently sold it to Link Theory of Japan in 2006. Link Theory re-launched the Helmut Lang label with new designers in 2007, (Michael e Nicole Colovos untill 2014).
While the brand with his name went on, Helmut Lang reinvented himself as an artist.
After several exhibitions since 2007 in Europe and United States, last winter, the New York gallery Sperone Westwater presented an exhibition of sculptures by Helmut Lang, the artist’s first New York gallery solo show.
Lang’s artistic practice is characterized by his use of materials and textures, assembled from diverse sources and repurposed and transmuted with resin and pigment into a series of pillar-like sculptures, each measuring between 10 and 12 feet high. A series of wall sculptures, composed of resin and pigment pressed together in plankton-like sheets, offers a delicate contrast to the taut tall pillars.
If with her fashion in the 90's Mr.Lang he dictated the rules of minimalism, now with his work following the wave of post-minimalism.
