The history of the slip dress, and its predecessor the eighteenth century robe volante and the chemise à la reine, is the history of a garment's transition from the boudoir dress become eveningwear. The reversal effected by underwear as outwear also links to decostruction in fashion in the way it brings inside to out structurally, rather than in terms of the cultural meanings associated with underwear, class, intimacy and eroticism.
