EYEDENTITY:STEPHANE GRAFF SOLO EXHIBITION

Galleria Mucciaccia inaugurates today at 6.30 pm Eyedentity, the first solo exhibition in Rome by the British/French artist Stephane Graff. His artistic research is strongly influenced by the theories of psychoanalysis, and themes of identity and memory . The exhibition will include a selection of works from the artist’s most famous series, starting with early works, from the photo-realistic series "Black Box" (1991), in which the artist conceals the eyes of his subjects, such as The Victorian Painter (2006) and "The Kiss" (2005), to his most recent “Glitch Paintings”, inspired by distorted images seen on television during a powerful electrical storm, such as Rear Window (from the movie The Window on the Courtyard by Alfred Hitchcock). Paintings from his impressive "Mille-Feuille" series (2014), created with over one hundred strips of wood and assembled together, will also be on display. Finally, his most recent Mugshot portraits, resulting from the performance "E’ proibito sorridere” (Smiling Is Prohibited), held at Galleria Mucciaccia in June 2017, will be brought together on the lower ground floor and exhibited as a giant grid of 70 silkscreened mugshots. To each of these vintage styled portraits, Graff added a number and an anagram of the subject’s name. These pictures relate to our "post-truth" era. In opposition to the superficial embellishment of the selfie trend, where one takes a photo of themselves in smiling poses, the artist specifically asked his models not to smile: "I found that a photo in which the subject does not smile often makes a more powerful statement and removes any trace of triviality“.

La Galleria Mucciaccia inaugura oggi alle ore 18.30 Eyedentity, la prima mostra personale a Roma dell’artista franco - inglese Stephane Graff. La sua indagine artistica è fortemente influenzata dalle teorie della psicoanalisi e si interroga sui temi dell'identità e della memoria. La mostra presenta una selezione di alcuni dei suoi lavori più noti, iniziando dalle prime opere della serie Black Box (1991), opere foto-realistiche nelle quali gli occhi del soggetto sono celati dietro ad un riquadro nero, quali ad esempio The Victorian painter (2006) e The Kiss (2005); fino ai più recenti Glitch Paintings, come Rear Window (dal film “La finestra sul cortile di Alfred Hitchcock), ispirati alle immagini distorte createsi nel televisore dell’artista durante una tempesta elettrica. In mostra anche opere della serie Mille-Feuille 2014, composte da più di 100 strisce di legno assemblate insieme. Infine i Mugshots, i ritratti più recenti, scaturiti dalla performance E’ proibito sorridere (Smiling Is Prohibited), tenutasi nella galleria Mucciaccia nel giugno scorso. Questi ultimi, sono esposti come una grande collezione di foto segnaletiche articolata con più di 70 serigrafie, a ciascuna delle quali l’artista ha aggiunto un numero e un anagramma del nome del soggetto. I Mugshots si riferiscono all’era della “post-verità”. In contrasto con l’abbellimento superficiale e forzato della moda dei selfie, dove ognuno si scatta una foto sorridendo, l’artista chiede specificatamente ai suoi modelli di non sorridere: “Mi sono accorto che una foto dove il soggetto non sorride di solito trasferisce un messaggio molto più potente e rimuove qualsiasi traccia di banalità”.
