A CENTURY AGO

A century ago, during the Twenties decade, fashion was revolutionary and extravagant and wonderful. The hemline crept up the leg as the decade unfolded the back line dropped a little lower, but the neckline remained chaste and demure. The androgynous, youthful look came to represent the decade., though not every woman could carry it off. Thankfully there were several styles to choose from, as long as they had a low waist. Hemlines rose and dropped at least twice, skirts being at their shortest around 1927. The gown's straight silhouettes were often broken up or emphasized by geometric decoration, and different colorurs could be used for the top and bottom halves. Fuller skirts remained in fashion, becoming more prominent when hemlines were lower. But the 1920s are characterized by two distinct periods of fashion: in the early part of the decade, change was slower, and there was more reluctance to wear the new, revealing styles made popular. From 1925, the public more passionately embraced the styles now typically associated with the Roaring Twenties. Despite the brevity of their reign, knee-leigh evening gowns sprinkled with beads and sequins are probably the main garments associated with the Roaring Twenties.

I ADORE PAUL POIRET

I want to share with you the pictures of these beautiful dresses by Paul Poiret. These dresses are more than a century years old, but they are absolutely eternal.
Paul Poiret dominated the world of fashion in the early twentieth century. Not only did he introduce a radically simplified female silhouette, but he also pioneered the sale of women's clothes tighter with lifestyle accessories such as perfume and decorative objects for the home.
Known in America as the "King of Fashion", he liberated women from constriction undergarments, most significantly from the corset, which had shaped the female form almost without interruption for hundreds of years. In so doing, he revolutionised dressmaking by shifting its emphasis away from the skills of tailoring to those based on the skills of draping. He advocated dresses that hung from the shoulder, pioneering such styles as the chemise, which he introduced as early as 1911.
beyond his technical innovation, Poiret established the blueprint of the modern fashion business. he founded a perfume and cosmetics company, as well as decorative arts company. In forming these enterprises, he became the first designer to relate fashion to interior design and to promote a "total lifestyle".
Poiret's designs reflected the dominant artistic discourses of the early twentieth century, most notably orientalist.
