Alexandra Bachzetsis will perform the Italian premiere of her piece "Private: Wear a mask when you talk to me" at the
Museo del Novecento's Sala Fontana-Milan.
The second event in
FURLA SERIES #01-
Time after Time, Space after Space, features Swiss/Greek artist and choreographer Alexandra Bachzetsis, whose cross-disciplinary approach blends dance, theater, performance, and the visual arts.
Bachzetsis’s investigation centers on the language of the body, specifically exploring how gestures and poses are shaped and determined by the stereotypes and clichés of popular culture. Her performances draw inspiration from many fields of mainstream culture, ranging from the entertainment world to fashion, to re-examine the tropes of contemporary femininity. Her exploration of the human body revolves around an ongoing analysis of how gestures are used in real life and fictional entertainment, whether “lowbrow”—music videos and television—or “highbrow”—the performing arts—and how these cultural genres interact and influence each other.
In this solo performance, the artist portrays a sequence of characters caught up in a vast range of stereotyped performative/choreographic/athletic poses and movements. One can make out a multitude of references: to Asian drag queen moves, fitness routines, advertisements, Michael Jackson, yoga positions, or even the postures found in football games or porn films.
This piece explores how gender and sexual identity is expressed through the body and through movement, through an approach that pays homage to the experiments of dancer and choreographer Trisha Brown.

Alexandra Bachzetsis, artista e coreografa svizzera, di origini greche,
che ha un approccio trasversale che si muove tra arti visive, danza, teatro e performance.
Il linguaggio del corpo è al centro della sua ricerca che indaga nello specifico il modo in cui gestualità e atteggiamenti sono fortemente condizionati e determinati da stereo-tipi e cliché imposti dalla cultura popolare. Nelle sue performance Bachzetsis si ispira a vari ambiti della cultura mainstream, dall’industria dello spettacolo a quella della moda, per inter-rogare e ripensare i tropi della femminilità contemporanea. La sua indagine sul corpo umanopassa attraverso una continua analisi dell’uso del gesto nella vita reale e nella finzione dello spettacolo, nella cultura “bassa” - dei video-clip o della televisione - e in quella “alta” - delle arti performative - e del modo in cui questi generi si relazionano e influenzano reciprocamente.
L’artista,unica protagonista interpreta personaggi differenti in una sessione performativa/coreografica/sportiva che mette in scena una vasta gamma di posture e gesti stereotipati. I riferimenti che si possono rintracciare sono molteplici: dalle movenze delle drag queen orientali al fitness; dalla pubblicità alle coreografie di Michael Jackson; dalle posizioni yoga a pose del football americano o del porno. Il lavoro
esplora i comportamenti di genere e l’identità sessuale a partire da un approccio al corpo e al movimento che omaggia le sperimentazioni condotte dalla danzatrice e coreografa Trisha Brown.
