PLENUM, A SPACE COMPLETELY FILLED WITH MATTER

Yunchul Kim is an electroacoustic music composer and artist based in Berlin and Seoul. Through his works he attempts to minimize-and ideally-eliminate anthropocentrism from perceptual processes and reintroduce ways of pensive involvement to absolute ideals in a series of artistic operations
His work is focusing on the artistic potential of fluid dynamics, metamaterials (photonic crystals) and especially on the context of magnetohydrodynamics.
Plenum, a space completely filled with matter-Try to imagine zero-total nothingness is the title of his solo exhibition that I visited at Gallery damdam in Berlin. The term "Plenum" was coined by Descartes to des-cribe our world, as a space that is always filled with matter.
It is not possible to consider the notion of absent space and time. Our perception is binary and, hence, we fathom the world through contrasting opposites. For example, we can think of light and darkness, good and evil, being awake and asleep. However, we have trouble considering the notion of non existence and we have even greater difficulties to grasp ideas that are beyond our empirical threshold of perception, such as non space and nontime. Indeed, we built our individual and anthropocentric models of the world based on the experiences we acquire through interactions of our body with matter in the limited period of a single lifetime.

KÖNIG GALERIE EXHIBITIONS

On my rounds for Berlin I went to the opening of two exhibitions at König Galerie. The exhibits were not particularly interesting, but the Gallery is really beautiful.
 On the first floor it's display the Norbert Bisky's "Trilemma" exhibition. The show consists of an installation of paintings on canvas and paper staged in main room of the gallery. The term trilemma describes a situation of conflict where you have to choose between three equally unfavourable or unacceptable options. Norbert Bisky uses this motif of the threefold dead-end as a conceptual starting point for his predominantly large scaleworks that render chaos, violence and destruction in bold intense colours and soft pastel tones against a blue backdrop. The work that gives the exhibition its title shows a man with his back turned to the viewer in front of a frame-filling three-colour trilemma diagram that in turn is superimposed with a geographical map. Details of burning rubble,palm fronds and an interwoven mass of people are visible within the depicted borders. Put in relation to one another, these different elements portray a situation of territorial conflict as experienced by Tel Aviv (Tel Aviv is one of the cities that Bisky visits regularly),and other cities today. The conceptual starting points of violence, instability and arbitrariness so present in Bisky’s work come to the fore here and produce images that in diverse and complex ways present a chronicle of our time.
 In the St. Agnes tower is's shows the an installation by Monica Bonvicini: Bonded Eternmale. Bonded Eternmale is a work developed by Monica Bonvicini 15 years ago, during her research on building material (Eternit, from where the title comes), gender and its consequently living design. The installation was inspired beside other lectures also on Emily Post book “The personality of a House” which core is a distinguished set of displays and norm for women and men’s domestic spaces, and to the male dwelling dream, well represented in the Bachelor’ s Pads published in the magazine Playboy from the beginning on.This installation is the sequel to “Eternmale” from 2001: A calendar the artist conceived based on the idea of the Pirelli calendar of the 80ies. The publication is a collection of MB drawings and collages around the stereotypical Bachelor’ s Pads, lifestyle and ironic etiquette. The idea of a domesticated male is at the base of the calendar.

GORDON MATTA-CLARK_GALERIE SHULTE BERLIN

On 9th September I went to the opening of Gordon Matta-Clark's exhibition  at Shulte  Gallery in Berlin.  It's a strange exhibition, but the Matta-Clark's work is very interesting.
Gordon Matta-Clark (1943 - 1978, New York) was a conceptual artist best known for his so-called “building cuts,” a series of site-specific projects, which he carried out in the late 1970s involving the dissection of abandoned buildings.
Matta-Clark never practiced architecture, but instead devised "anarchitecture," an alternative use of buildings. The films and photo collages he made of his “building cuts” dovetail with the experimental, disorienting quality of the architectural cuts, likewise constituting a denunciation of the function of architecture.
The Notion of Mutable Space is both a fundamental element and a postulation in Gordon Matta-Clark’s thinking. It is also the title of the comprehensive exhibition at Galerie Thomas Schulte with over 100 original works, which broaches the subject of Matta-Clark’s architectural concept and how it finds expression in his oeuvre and practice.

SYBILLE PAULSEN-JEWELLERY MADE FROM HUMAN HAIR

Sybille Paulsen is a jewellery designer with a degree in architecture and a passion for art who transforms her research into manufacturing unique designs. All her pieces are carefully handmade in a labour intensive process that can take days before transforming into a beautiful object to wear. Sibille Paulsen pieces are made with human hair. Strongly connected with her roots, with the details of the daily existence and with nature, her pieces are a mixture of delicacy and strength,fragility and precision, visible and invisible in the tiny details, purity of shapes and romance in content and materials.
 Sybille Paulsen will exhibit her creations and a series of photographic documentation about her work by Libby Edwards Photography from the 5th of May till the 2nd of June in the store in Lychener Strasse 11.
