'GET ME PATRICK' - ADDIO PATRICK DEMARCHELIER

"È con grande tristezza che annunciamo la morte di Patrick Demarchelier, avvenuta il 31 marzo 2022, all'età di 78 anni."- Questo l'annuncio su Instagram da parte dell'entourage del fotografo. 

 Demarchelier nasce in un piccolo paesino vicino Parigi nel 1943, trascorre la sua adolescenza a Le Havre. A 17 anni la sua prima macchina fotografica. A 20 anni si trasferisce a Parigi dove diventa fotografo prima lavorando come assistente di Hans Feurer, poi in proprio per Elle e Marie Claire. Nel 1975 si trasferisce a New York iniziando una lunga collaborazione con le riviste americane, in particolare le testate di Condé Nast come Vogue, Glamour e Mademoiselle. Nel 1992 approda ad Herper's Bazaar, assunto da Liz Tilberis, per le sue fotografie così chiare, grafiche. Era il materiale perfetto per i paginoni disegnati dal direttore creativo Fabien Baron. Dagli anni '70 a oggi, Demarchelier ha realizzato le copertine di Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Elle, Esquire e Arena Homme. Suo, il Calendario Pirelli del 2005 e del 2008. Portano la sua firma anche molte campagne pubblicitarie maison d'alta moda da Chanel a Yves Saint Laurent, da Louis Vuitton a Versace fino a Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren e Calvin Klein. Fu il primo a fotografare Lady Diana di cui divenne il ritrattista ufficiale, il primo non britannico ad esser scelto come fotografo reale, con scatti che catturavano l'informalita' della principessa. 

Herper's Bazaar ha definito così il suo lavoro: "Per gente che vuole veramente apparire belle, Demarchelier è diventato il fotografo di elezione, forse il più desiderato degli anni '90".

FENDI HAUTE COUTURE DEBUTE

Kim Jones Makes His Fendi, and Haute Couture, Debut.It was his first collection for Fendi, but it was also his first ever womenswear collection (he's also at the head of Dior menswear, and prior to that, Jones held the position of director of menswear at Louis Vuitton for seven years), and Fendi’s debut spring haute couture show. Drawing from seemingly diverse inspirations, from the visual language of Bernini's marbles to Virginia Woolf's time-travelling, gender-blurring novel ‘Orlando’, the show navigates through a maze-like structure of glass boxes offering a “unique journey from the British Bloomsbury to Rome's Galleria Borghese,” explained the fashion house. The actress Demi Moore, opened the show and Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and Kate Moss (alongside her daughter Lila) all marked their return to the catwalk. Participated also Cara Delavigne, Adwoa Aboah, with her sister Kesewa, and Bella Hadid. Moreover on the runway Silvia Fendi’s daughters Leonetta and Delfina Delettrez (who created the Murano glass jewellery for the collection). Models walked out slowly to a Max Richter soundtrack amid glass boxes, on a show filmed behind closed doors with no live audience. Inspired by ‘Orlando’ and the Bloomsbury set of strong, intellectual women, Jones’ debut couture collection, offered both looks for women and men. It was filled with decadent, regal and structured silhouettes in metallic brocade, luxe translucent silk fabrics, woven jacquards, and hand-beaded tailoring. A love letter written by Virginia Woolf to Vita Sackville-West in 1928, only three years after Fendi was founded, Orlando’s literary conceits are directly interspersed throughout the collection, in form of metal-bound book clutches, as well as the text itself being inscribed onto Mother of Pearl minaudières and leather boots.

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHERS: ARTHUR ELGORT

Arthur Elgort was born in New York City in 1940. He studied painting at Hunter College. He realized that he would be too sociable for the solitary existence of a painter and decided to begin taking pictures. Soon after he made his 1971 debut in British Vogue. With one shoot and an iconic picture he created, not only a sensation but also a permanent place for him in the world of fashion photography.
Elgort has a strong predilection for the nuances of grey, that can be found in the portraits.
 The delightful capturer of the supermodel era, the American photographer launched an innovative approach to the medium with his photojournalistic-like snapshots that emphasized movement and the moment just as ballet that had always influenced him. The models that he chose were lively, wore less make-up.  His distinctive feature is immediacy, the way he seized the instant when the subject is moving.  The leitmotiv that connects all his portraits is the immediacy, given by the choice of a non-artificial lighting.  Taking his models outside into the real world, where the looks he was shooting would really be worn and put to the test, became a signature of his personal style.
 Arthur Elgort quickly became one of the best-known and most emulated photographers.
His long career has also given him the chance to work on many major ad campaigns with highly coveted high-end fashion houses and luxury brands.

 Arthur Elgort è nato a New York nel 1940. Ha studiato pittura presso l'Hunter College. Ma dopo aver realizzato che la vita solitaria del pittore non faceva per lui decide di iniziare a scattare foto. Poco dopo fa il suo debutto nel 1971 per British Vogue. Con i suoi scatti  crea, non solo una sensazione, ma si guadagna un posto permanente  nel mondo della fotografia di moda.
 Elgort ha una forte predilezione per le sfumature di grigio, che si possono trovare nei ritratti.
Nella fantastica era delle top model, il fotografo americano  lancia un approccio innovativo con le sue istantanee di stampo fotogiornalistico che  sottolineano il movimento e il momento giusto da catturare come per  il balletto da cui riceve una forte influenza. Le modelle che sceglie sono naturali, indossano poco make-up.  La sua caratteristica distintiva è l'immediatezza, il modo in cui ha colto l'istante in cui il soggetto è in movimento. Il filo conduttore che collega tutti i suoi ritratti è l'immediatezza, data dalla scelta di un'illuminazione non-artificiale. Portando i suoi modelli al di fuori nel mondo reale, dove gli abiti vengono realmente indossati,  diventa così una firma del suo stile personale.
Arthur  Elgort diventa  rapidamente uno dei fotografi più noti e più emulati. La sua lunga carriera gli ha  dato la possibilità di lavorare su molte campagne pubblicitarie importanti con case di moda di fascia alta e marchi di lusso.

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHERS:IRVING PENN

Irving Penn was born on 1917 in New Jersey, he was a brother of a film director Arthur Penn. He attended the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Art where he studied drawing, painting, graphics, and industrial arts. While still a student, he worked at Harper's Bazaar which published several of Penn's drawings. During the 40's he worked as art director at Saks Fifth Avenue, then he spend a year painting and taking photographs in Mexico, and when he returned to New York he start to worked for Vogue. His first cover appeared in October 1943, and he shot over 150 covers in about fifty years. Penn was displayed in the most famous galleries all over the world. In the 1950s, Penn founded his own studio in New York and began making advertising photographs. Penn died in 2009 at his home in Manhattan.
Irving Penn was among the first photographers to pose subjects against a simple grey or white backdrop and he effectively used this simplicity,he presents the figure to be portrayed in stark contrast with the background. Some of his images are recognizable: often they were portraits done by placing your subject in front of two backdrops arranged at an angle.His black and white prints are notable for their deep contrast.

Quando era ancora studente, Irving lavorò presso Harper Bazaar e la rivista pubblicò molti dei suoi disegni. Nel 1950,  ha fondato il proprio studio a New York e ha cominciato a fare fotografie pubblicitarie. E' morto nel 2009 nella sua casa di Manhattan.
Irving Penn è stato tra i primi fotografi a rappresentare i soggetti su di un semplice sfondo grigio o bianco e ha usato in modo efficace questa semplicità, presenta la figura ritratta in netto contrasto con lo sfondo. Alcune sue immagini sono riconoscibili: spesso furono ritratti eseguiti posizionando il soggetto di fronte a due fondali disposti ad  angolo. le sue stampe in bianco e nero sono notevoli per il loro contrasto profondo.

David Bailey was Born in 1938 in London, he learned to shoot by himself, before joining the RAF in Malaysia in 1957. In 1959 he became a photographic assistant at the John French studio In 1961 being contracted as a fashion photographer for British Vogue magazine.
 With model Jean Shrimpton, he became known as one of the key photographers of the decade, capturing "swinging London", along with Terence Donovan and Brian Duffy. The three photographers socialised with musicians, actors,gangsters and royalty, together, they were the first celebrity photographers. The pleats of Mary Quant mini-skirts, the Beatles’ mop tops, the Who, the massive sense of optimism and the sexual revolution was the subjects of his shots.
David Bailey created a deft new photographic style and helped to create icons of Twiggy, Verushka, Edie Sedgwick, and Penelope Tree. He changes the way of make photography, by using natural light and simple, clean lines. Bailey created a fresh photo style that paid little attention to narrow technical concerns. What was important was the subject, the clothes, youth, freedom and the revolutionary message – and it was all done with a minimalist style that brought out the freshness of the look. David Bailey is credited with photographing some of the most compelling images of the last five decades. He had capturing iconic images of legends such as: Beatles, The Rolling Stones,Catherine Deneuve,Twiggy, Damien Hirst and Kate Moss, these simple yet powerful black and white images have become a genre in their own right.
Since 1966, Bailey has also directed several television commercials and documentaries, and he photographed album sleeve art for musicians including The Rolling Stones and Marianne Faithfull. Today he continues to sign many shots for magazines and campaigns.
