LIKE A BIRD, NOT A FEATHER-LORCAN O'NEILL GALLERY ROME

Normally it is bad to be late, but sometimes it can be a real opportunity. I knew that the opening of the exhibition "Like a bird, not a feather" was at 6pm, but one thing lead to another and by the time I got there it was 9. As soon as I entered the courtyard to leading to Lorcan O' Neill's gallery in vicolo dei Catinari, the lights were turned off. Mad at myself I was about to leave, but Mr O'Neill kindly offered to reopen he gallery for a quick visit. Not only that, he even took the time to briefly introduce the works on show. How lucky and pleased was I to have a private visit of the gallery on a opening night!
The exhibition is a selection of pieces selected by previously shows exhibited at the gallery.
On the floor of the first room is displaied a sculptur by Richard Long: "Roman Line"-serpentino stones, on wall behind we can see three works by Giorgio Griffa. Richard Long is one of the most prominent members of a generation of artists who revolutionised the art world in 1970's. Combining elements of Arte Povera, minimalism and conceptual art, he has been in the vanguard of Land Art since 1967. Long works with nature and creates a spiritual bond with the hearth, reviving and materialising the idea that nature has always been present in artistic activity.
Giorgio Griffa is one the most radical artists of the avant-garde working in Italy since the 70s. His paintings employ a gestural series of marks in bright and intense acrylic colours on raw, unstretched canvas. In the same room there are also some works by Martin Creed, an artist who sees no distinction between visual art and music, his pieces range from compositions for orchestra to performances with his band and dancers, from architectural commissions and public monuments to paintings, sculpture, installation and film.
The second room is dedicated to the german artist Anselm Kiefer. His work combines painting, photography, book and sculpture. Kiefer's existential work of memory expands to a spiritual quest fuelled by great myths and cabalistic mysticism.
In the third room are on display four works by Luigi Ontani: "Erme Bonaventura", "Angelo rivelato", "autoritratto con tavolozza dei colori viventi" and "Tavolozza dei colori Nominali"
where are depicted characters who have to name a color.  Luigi Ontani is considered one of the most influential and innovative Italian artists working today. He has been working across multiple media since 1965 experimenting photography, creating life-size prints, performance, video and film. He is best know for his Tableaux Vivants, works in which he is the subject, where he combines Western and Eastern iconographical traditions while referencing historical, allegorical and mythological themes.

PROTOTYPOLOGY-GAGOSIAN GALLERY

New opening yesterday, January 14th, at Gagosian Gallery of Rome:
PROTOTYPOLOGY-AN INDEX OF PROCESS AND MUTATION
"Prototypology" explores research and development in the work of thirty contemporary artists, tracing the evolution from idea to finished artwork through drawings, archives, maquettes, and bricolage. In doing so the exhibition establishes a typology of diverse drafts. The studio is a liminal zone for sourcing, modifying, and testing. The "sketch" represents the initial impulse from mind to hand, the developmental process whereby form begins to emerge. The exhibition reveal moments of process that lead to epiphanies. Monumental, civic, everyday, and otherworldly gestures are visible in a range of preparatory drawings and proposals.
These varied forms represent important moments of mutation via trial and error—in essence, the risk of experimentation that typifies the artist's quest. Through sketches both graphic and sculptural, the process behind each artist's production finds form.
Artists: Vladimir Arkhipov, Richard Artschwager, Nina Beier, Will Boone, Mike Bouchet, Chris Burden, Jason Dodge, Aleksandra Domanović, Dan Graham, Loris Gréaud, Michael Heizer, Carsten Höller, Thomas Houseago, Allan McCollum, Takashi Murakami, Albert Oehlen, Claes Oldenburg, Steven Parrino, Giuseppe Penone, Kirsten Pieroth, Ry Rocklen, Nancy Rubins, Arcangelo Sassolino, David Smith, Rudolf Stingel, Robert Therrien, Mungo Thomson, Tatiana Trouvé, Cy Twombly, Rachel Whiteread.

Ieri sera, 14 gennaio, alla Gagosian Gallery di Roma ha inaugurato:
PROTOTYPOLOGY-AN INDEX OF PROCESS AND MUTATION

GIACOMO GUIDI GALLERY-NORWAY FOCUS

Friday three rooms of the gallery Giacomo Guidi inaugurated three different exhibitions.
In the main room displays works of Per Barclay:2 large format photograph and a huge tub full of oil, the artist creates a reflecting surface which modifies and alters the installations, making them inaccessible and unreachable.
Per Barclay was born in 1955 in Oslo. He studied Art History at the Bergen University, where he first came across Norwegian artists. In 1979, his desire to engage in new artistic references brought him to Italy where he carried on his studies. He studied design and photography in Florence, where he got acquainted with the Italian artistic heritage, and studied Fine Arts at the Bologna and Rome Academies. In 1983, he started his career as an artist in Rome: he began working with wood, painting, photography and later started using steel and glass as structural elements and liquids as pictorial elements. In 1989, after a short stay in Naples he moved to Turin and subsequently to Paris, where he currently lives and works.

In another room: Obiecta, on display works by Massimiliano Gatti, Leonardo Genovese, Bohnchang Koo, Ingar Krauss, Laura Letinsky, Marco Palmieri, Sergio Scabar and Franco Vimercati. Obiecta, is a collective that presents a reflection on the artist's eye through the photographic language, objects, are the protagonists of this reflection.
Along the corridor are exposed the project Found Photos in Detroit, a documentary about Detroit, in order to document the state of decay in which pours the city after the socio-economic crisis that hit the mid-seventies.
In one last small room the Alchemy's esoteric atmosphere through the Eduardo Dionea Cicconi's works.

THE END IS THE BEGINNING

Sacripante Art Gallery opens with its first exhibition:The End Is the Beginning with artists Lucamaleonte and David Diavù Vecchiato.
The space mixes baroque interior design with rough cement and becomes the base of a bold curatorial project:two annual exhibitions, a focus on the artists who literally invade the walls for 6 months. The entire environment becomes a cradle for an artistic idea which dies after six months: ten artworks for each artists, serigraphies and t-shirts with drawings exclusively realised by the two artists who, on the walls of the last room, tell a story that after six months dies to be reborn.
The End Is the Beginning is about the archetype  of beginning and end.
"For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth. They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered." (Genesis 7,17 7, 19)
The biblical recount Noah's Ark inspired Lucamaleonte and David Diavù Vecchiato to realise twenty artworks on wood which reveal their concept of beginning and end, death and salvation. Each artist recreates on broken boards the tragedy of the ending which is seen as a point of rebirth, an Omega merging with Alpha in a love and death embrace.
