DANIEL STORTO-GLOVEMAKER

Big brands make use of the expert hands of artisans and designers to produce accessories such as handbags, gloves, hats, sunglasses, shoes, etc .. Often these artisans and designers also work with products that sell as their own brand, less known in the market. In this post I want to talk about an accomplished  Italian-American craftsman/designer who produces gloves.
 Daniel Storto designs Haute Couture and Ready to Wear gloves. He is the last remaining glove maker with the only storefront shop where you can observe him at work using tools all made in Gloversville dating back to the early 1800's and that were passed down to him from previous glove makers. The shop is a tribute to all of the glove makers that have come before him and he is proud to be preserving an important chapter of American history.
Daniel Storto has collaborated with fashion designers such as Alexander McQueen, Geoffrey Beene, Dries Van Noten, Isaac Mizrahi, Givenchy, Guy Laroche, Derek Lam, Andre, Oscar de la Renta, Duckie Brown, Bob Mackie, Perry Ellis, Vera Wang, Proenza Schouler, Diane von Furstenberg, Timothy Everest, Paul Smith and J. Mendel.
Daniel Storto's deep knowledge of glove history and the evolution of glove-making techniques. The Costume Institute at the esteemed Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and The Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto have made his work a part of their permanent collection.

 I grossi brands spesso si avvalgono delle mani esperte di artigiani e designer per produrre accessori come borse, guanti, cappelli, occhiali, scarpe, ecc..
Spesso questi artigiani e designer lavorano anche prodotti che vendono con il loro marchio, meno conosciuto sul mercato.
In questo post voglio parlare di un affermato artigiano/designer italo-americano che produce guanti.
Daniel Storto progetta guanti Haute Couture e ready to wear.  Daniel è l'ultimo produttore di guanti rimasto con l'unico negozio/vetrina dove è possibile osservarlo al lavoro utilizzando strumenti tutti realizzati a Gloversville risalenti ai primi anni del 1800 e che sono stati passati  a lui da produttori di guanti precedenti. Il negozio è un omaggio a tutti i produttori di guanti che sono venuti prima di lui e lui è orgoglioso di  preservare un importante capitolo della storia americana.

FROM THE 800's TO NOW

Towards the end of 1800 sleeves are very wide; to become slowly smaller and smaller  and later on,returning to swell, although a lesser extent in the 40s of the last century and again in the 80s. For a couple of seasons they back in the catwalks of this millennium, years in which, unlike the previous century, the fashion diktact are not so clear and defined.
(Considering that women in the 800's were certainly more minute, at that time,  the chiffon blouse that I wear had to fall on the sides, weared by me becomes a very up-to-date "cropped" blouse).

Verso la fine del 1800 le maniche sono molto ampie per poi asciugarsi piano piano e tornare a gonfiarsi, anche se in modo più contenuto negli anni '40 del secolo scorso e di nuovo negli anni '80. Da un paio di stagioni tornano nelle passerelle di questo millennio, anni in cui, diversamente dal secolo precedente, i diktact della moda non sono così netti e definiti.
(Tenendo conto che le donne nell''800 erano sicuramente più minute, la blusa in chiffon che indosso, all l'epoca doveva cadere sui fianchi, su di me diventa un'attualissima "cropped"blouse).

LATE 800's BLOUSE

In the 1890s and early 900's, sleeves are becoming more voluminous, and the skirts have a bell shape, aided by heavy silks for which they are made, often lined to remain rigid. Under the skirt are gone tournure and wide saddles and now the volume on the sides and left to its natural shape. The neck is surrounded by a high collar, in contrast to the amplitude of the clothes, the hair is gathered in discrete chignon. Due to the large volume reached from the sleeves, they preferred short coat and large capes or pilgrims with high collars that frame the face.

 Intorno al 1890 e l'inizio del '900 le maniche diventano sempre piu' voluminose, e le gonne hanno la forma a campana, favorita dalle pesanti sete di cui sono fatte, spesso foderate per rimanere rigide. Sotto alla gonna sono spariti tournure e ampi sellini e ora il volume sui fianchi è lasciato alla sua forma naturale. Il collo e' fasciato da un colletto alto e montante e, in contrasto con l’ampiezza delle vesti, i capelli sono raccolti in discreti chignon. A causa dell’ampio volume raggiunto dalle maniche, come soprabito si preferiscono corte e ampie mantelline o pellegrine dagli alti colli che incorniciano il viso.

SPHERE HEELS

Walking on a sphere may seem precarious, perhaps that's why the heels are usually rectangular, to make us firmly on the ground, but is not required to make tightrope walker performance, sometimes walk on metal, wood, plastic, or maybe Crystal balls, can give us the sensation of totter and dance poised on our steps. It's not so bad. I understood  that stability is boring to me.
Camminare su di una sfera può sembrare precario, forse è per questo che i tacchi solitamente sono di forma rettangolare, per farci sentire ben saldi a terra, eppure pur non dovendo fare performance funambolesche ogni tanto camminare su palle di metallo, legno, plastica o magari di cristallo può regalarci la sensazione di traballare e ballare in bilico sui nostri passi. E non è affatto male. Ho capito che la stabilità mi annoia.

Five Dutch guys produce organic man's underwear.
 This hardly would interest me, but the ironic way that they choosed to present their collection caught my attention.
 A-dam is a brand that’s determined to meet the modern man’s needs with well designed boxer briefs - in a wide variety of colours and styles. A brand for men with character, who do what they love and make the most of every day.
A-dam Underwear boxers are made from 95% organic cotton and 5% elastane, giving them their comfortable feel. They use recycled materials for packaging and other sales materials too. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibres. The aim of the standard is to define worldwide recognised requirements that ensure organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labelling in order to provide a credible assurance to the end consumer.
They are based in Amsterdam, which used to be a port to the rest of the World. They will use a more modern infrastructure to get to us.

GLOBETROTTER BAGS

Journey in the heart of Rome.
 Last night in an apartment in city center, between Buddha statues, oriental flavor's furniture, the "Globetrotter bags" collection was the star of the evening.
Leather, suede, fabrics are all hand-painted and enriched with details from around the world, Francesca Reale's bags are ethnic-inspired but the manufacturing is all Italian.
Each bag is unique, one of my favorite is in fur with trapezoid shape and fabric and mirrors inlays.
 Fringes and colors brighten the dark winter giving us a piece of the world hung on the shoulder.

Viaggio nel pieno centro di Roma.
Ieri sera in un appartamento in centro, tra statuette di Buddha, e mobili dal sapore orientale, la collezione  "Globetrotter bags" è stata la protagonista della serata.
Pelle, camoscio, tessuti tutti dipinti a mano e arricchiti da dettagli provenienti da tutto il mondo, le borse di Francesca Reale sono di ispirazione etnica ma la manifattura è tutta italiana.
Ogni borsa è un pezzo unico, le mie preferite quelle di pelliccia a trapezio con intarsi di tessuto e specchietti.
Frange e  colori illumineranno il buio inverno regalandoci un pezzo di mondo appeso ad una spalla.
