L'uomo e l'albero" (The Man and the Tree) by Fabio Cafagna at the
Carlo Bilotti Museum, Aranciera of Villa Borghese.
The exhibition present a selection of works that retrace Maurizio Pierfranceschi’s artistic career, and explore the relationship between man and nature, and between architecture and landscape.
The title “L’uomo e l’albero” refers to Pierfranceschi’s first piece, a small oil painting exhibited in 1985 at the Galleria al Ferro di Cavallo in Rome. Since then, his “loyalty to his roots”, has been at the centre of his research.
Since the beginning of his career, Pierfranceschi’s paintings and sculptures have evolved and refined without losing their “coarse, powerful, and absolutely earthly language” that Pierfranceschi attributed to Alberto Burri, “an earth-bound man” and that in time also fatally became his own.
Man and nature become one on paper, wood, and canvas. They blend into one another, mirroring each other until becoming a mixture of colour and materials that has the same spontaneity and vivacity, yet controlled in its form, of a living entity.
The exhibition begins in the museum’s nymphaeum with a large triptych that dialogues with the unusual architecture characterising the space, thus generating unexpected connections.
The small painting L’uomo e l’albero (The Man and the Tree) will be featured alongside a recent large painting on wood resuming same theme thirty years later and a small self-portrait in white terra-cotta.
Displayed in the two rooms on the ground floor are a series of works on canvas that reflect on the painting and landscape of Pierfranceschi’s Marche; a selection of works on cardboard and a series of sculptures made from gathered materials

L’esposizione presenta una selezione di circa 50 opere dell’artista che ripercorre tutta la sua attività e che indaga il rapporto tra l’uomo e la natura, tra l’architettura e il paesaggio.
Il titolo L'uomo e l'albero ricalca quello di un piccolo olio su tela – il primo della produzione dell’artista – esposto nel 1985 alla Galleria Ferro di Cavallo di Roma. Sin da allora la “fedeltà alle proprie radici”, è stata al centro della ricerca di Pierfranceschi.
Pittura e scultura si sono evolute e raffinate senza mai perdere quel “linguaggio ruvido, potente, assolutamente terrestre” che Pierfranceschi riferiva ad Alberto Burri, e che col tempo è divenuto fatalmente anche il suo.
Uomo e natura, nelle carte, nei legni e nelle tele dell’artista si confondono, si rispecchiano, fino a divenire un impasto di colore e materia che, seppur formalmente controllato, ha il dono della spontaneità e della vitalità.
Il percorso espositivo si apre sul Ninfeo, con un trittico di grandi teleri in dialogo con l’insolita architettura che connota il luogo, generando corrispondenze inaspettate. Il piccolo quadro L’uomo e l’albero sarà messo a confronto con un nuovo grande pannello in legno che ne riprende il tema trent’anni dopo e un autoritratto in terracotta bianca.
Nelle altre due sale del piano terra saranno esposti un ciclo di lavori su tela nei quali sono predominanti le riflessioni sulla pittura e sul paesaggio della terra di origine, le Marche; un selezionato nucleo di lavori su cartone e una serie di sculture che l’artista ha realizzato negli anni, con materiali di recupero.
